Sonoma county fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous
Public Relations subcommittee
The 1st Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Sonoma County was started in Cotati during 1968. There are now 96 meetings per week in Sonoma County. Our fellowship is part of the Northern California Region which has 20 areas facilitating over 1400 meetings per week.
Narcotics Anonymous has experienced phenomenal growth worldwide over the last 20 years. There are now over 53,000 NA meetings per week in over 140 countries.
Our literature is translated in over 40 languages. There are over 300 translation projects underway at this time. Most of these projects are being done at the local level. The Basic Text has been translated in Farsi, Hebrew, Simple Chinese and Filipino besides Spanish, French, Russian, Swedish and Polish. To name a few Wherever our literature is translated it is followed by rapid growth.
In order to deal with this tremendous growth the NA fellowship has had to develop new literature to meet the influx of new members. One of the quickest growing segments around the world is young addicts. Links to the new literature are included. There are also links to some literature that may be relevant to your clients’ needs. We are also seeing growth in the ‘baby boomer era’ addict. We hope to develop literature in the near future for that group. Literature helps the new members identify with our program.
In the US we are experiencing an unprecedented number of legal referrals from the courts and corrections. This has been a challenge due to the difficulties of cooperation with these organizations while staying within the boundaries of our 12 Traditions and avoiding the appearance of affiliation with outside enterprises. We have a pamphlet, Introduction to NA Meetings, to assist these referred persons with understanding language and protocols with NA meetings.
NA has also been challenged by incidences of disruptive and predatory behavior. NA World Services has written a service pamphlet, Disruptive and Violent Behavior, to assist the fellowship in responding to these problems at the group and area levels. Some areas in Northern California have responded by creating newcomer orientations that occur weekly. These efforts have been, for the most part, successful.
